California Titles

Bidder with California addresses may not part-out vehicles.

Bidders that have a California address and are going to be registering the vehicle in California must complete inspections.
All passenger vehicles with a clean title will need a smog inspection. All passenger vehicles with a salvage title will need a smog
and a brake & lamp inspection. This is a challenging part of the process. The vehicle you have just purchased does not have
plates, has not been inspected, may or may not be road worthy, should have insurance, has no temporary permit, and
basically cannot be driven legally on a California highway. To proceed, the bidder has a couple of options.

1. You can wait until A&A sends you the title and paperwork. You have 10 days maximum from the day the title is sent out to go
to DMV. After you receive the title you can go to DMV, pay your sales tax and registration fees.
Hopefully DMV will give you a 30 day permit so you can drive the vehicle to get your inspections. Once the inspections are
done you can go back and get your plates and registration. If you have a clean title vehicle you will not have to bring the
vehicle to DMV. If you have a salvage title vehicle you will have to bring the vehicle for a VIN inspection. This option requires
you to go to DMV twice. Be aware that local DMV offices and personal have their own views on the California Vehicle Code.
It can be very frustrating and time consuming dealing with some of these people. Occasionally, buyers have had to go to
other DMV offices to complete their paperwork.

2.  With this option you only have to go to DMV once, and do not have to wait for the title to get your inspections.
But based on the smog/brake & lamp stations it may or may not work. Your smog station must be willing to do the smog with
only a temporary bill of sale that we send you, and you must be able to legally get the vehicle to and from the smog and/or
brake and lamp station. You should call the inspection station first. If your vehicle has a salvage title, it is easier if you find a
shop that does both smog and brake & lamp inspections.

On your A&A invoice, you will see the option to add $24 for a one trip permit. This will take a few days to get to you, and can't
be used to drive the vehicle from Copart's yard, which is forbidden anyway. You can try to purchase one of these trip permits
at DMV for $18, but for reasons unknown to us, they will often not sell them. The other obvious way to get the vehicle to the
inspection stations is to tow it. Once you have the inspections and title, you can go to DMV, pay your fees, and get your
plates and registration. If you have a salvage title, you will have to bring the vehicle in either by towing or on permit, and
get the VIN inspection.
